Project Context
The Strathern Pit Mulituse Project site is located at 8175 and 8216 Fair Avenue, Los Angeles, CA in the community of Sun Valley. The project is a collaborative effort between County of Los Angeles, PSOMAS, RJM, and NSI. The project proposes to convert a 45 acre site including a gravel pit, that is being used as an inert landfill, into a multi-purpose facility principally for water quality cleansing and flood control management. In the land conversion other benefits will be realized including active and passive recreation and habitat enhancements. According to LA County and PSOMAS Strathern Pit had been mined for sand and gravel during 1940s through the late 1970s. In the 1990s the pit was converted to an inert landfill. (PSOMAS)
PSOMAS, as the project lead, proposed a concept that involves constructing stormwater storage and treatment wetlands, and then pumping the treated water to Sun Valley Park, where it will be infiltrated into existing infiltration basins. This process will provide water treatment for metals, bacteria, sediment, trash, and other pollutants of concern. (PSOMAS)
The Project’s specific goals are to improve stormwater quality and treat storm flows through constructed wetlands to remove pollutants in captured urban stormwater runoff. Additionally, the project seeks to enhance flood protection zones by capturing storm runoff from the Sun Valley Watershed. The final project will ultimately enhance open space by increasing vegetation and recreational amenities, allowing opportunites for wildlife habitat. Increased habitat in turn becomes an educational and recreational resource to the local community. (PSOMAS)
