Project Context

The Mine Brook Road Project is a new 12-home development located in Bernards Township, NJ. The project will become a precedent for green community design in New Jersey.  NSI is collaborating with Back to Nature, an important sustainability partner, to guide the design process and to facilitate an innovative and regenerative development. The development is being guided by the following concepts:

-Natural Resource Enhancement
-Land Preservation
-Ground Water Recharge and Soil Health
-Model for Sustainable Agriculture
-Green Building and Energy-efficient Design
-Character Preservation
-Viewshed Protection

NSI Contribution

NSI’s role will be designing an onsite wastewater treatment system that uses natural systems as the driving engine for treatment. The development contains five bedroom homes with a wastewater design flow of 7,200 gallons per day. The wastewater system consists of small-diameter collection network, a subsurface flow constructed wetlands with recirculation, sand filtration and subsurface irrigation and reuse.  The completed system will allow the community to reuse treated water to support the developing landscape. The proposed treatment system, which consists of four treatment steps, is a low energy, low maintenance treatment system.  Water quality from the system will meet or exceed all of the State of New Jersey water quality standards for the subsurface disposal of treated wastewater.

The Mine Brook Road Project will be a green standard for decentralized developments in the state of New Jersey.
