Project Context

Gontina Building & Design built a two story single family home in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. The Metro Detroit Residence home was designed to comply with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED for Homes standards, and will be LEED Platinum certified. The design considers energy efficiency, water efficiency, streamlined systems and materials.

NSI determined that a sophisticated rainwater catchment system would provide the project with a substantial benefit. According to LEED criteria, a rainwater catchment system coupled with a rainwater garden will achieve a total of 8 LEED points.  The proposed high-efficiency irrigation system will likely add another 4 points under Credit WE_2.1 & 2.2 or WE_2.3.  The combined benefit of rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation will be 12 points.  The other benefits of the proposed coordinated system are the aesthetic additions, ongoing water savings to the owner, and a sense of pride and accomplishment for the builders and designers.

The Lenhill Court home is an important benchmark in the county. The rainwater harvesting system at residence demonstrates the relative ease of achieving significant sustainability goals without great cost to the end user.
