Project
Monroe County Landfill
Industry
This is a landfill leachate treatment system for leachate from an existing county landfill
- Average Temperatures - January 1C and July 23C
- Average Annual Precipitation - 35 inches
- Design Flow - 5,000 gpd
- Project Location - Monroe County, IN near Bloomington, IN
- Restrictions - System must provide treatment for 50 years.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES - Meet Indiana water quality standards for BOD, TSS, nitrogen, metals and be capable of treating leachate for fifty years.
- Provide an On-Site Treatment System - Meet Indiana water quality standards for BOD, TSS, nitrogen, metals and be capable of treating leachate for fifty years.
- Provide for Zero Discharge of Treated Effluent - Treated leachate can no longer be discharged into surface waters.
- Provide Long Term Treatment of Leachate Solids - System includes reed beds designed for the removal of leachate solids and in-situ treatment.
- Provide Treatment for Nitrogen -Treatment of nitrogen includes denitrification, plant uptake and harvest.
BENEFITS
- Extremely Low O&M Costs.
- Self maintaining and self regulating except for recycling pumps.
- Expansion Capacity - System can be easily expanded to accommodate landfill growth.
- Low Capital Cost.
- Ability to handle variations in design flows and loading rates.
- Ability to remove metals from leachate, and to biologically degrade priority pollutants.
