The Ethel M Chocolate factory in Henderson produces a very high strength wastewater as a result of washing candy-making equipment. BOD/COD levels are typically very high, resulting in the company being penalized with an additional utility surcharge to the City of Henderson. Rather than discharging the treated effluent to the City and incurring this penalty, Ethel M wanted to reuse the water to irrigate their spectacular cactus gardens.

In conjunction with OAI (Ocean Arks International) of Burlington, VT (construction management), Natural Systems International designed a wetlands for nitrate removal and a reed bed for sludge dewatering.
